Not Mushroom For Error

Years ago my wife and I bought a book on mushrooms, that way we could identify and harvest them when out walking, but we never felt confident as some of the poisonous ones are easily confused with the non poisonous varieties. Therefore I am at a loss to hear about José Manuel Hidalgo who ate a death cap mushroom last weekend to prove to his friends that it was not poisonous.

José got into an argument with a group of fungus enthusiasts concerning the dangers of the mushroom called the death cap. He decided to prove to them that it was not poisonous by biting it in half and chewing it. His fellow fungus enthusiasts called the Guardia Civil and an ambulance, José insisted there was no danger as he devoured the rest of the exhibit.

A close friend eventually persuaded Mr Hidalgo to be taken to Zafra Hospital where he started to show the first symptoms of intoxication "his whole body turned yellow then began to swell up, and he started throwing up uncontrollably," whereupon he was rushed in a mobile intensive care unit to the Infanta Cristina Hospital in Badajoz.

Mr Hidalgo left intensive care yesterday, and is waiting for test results to learn whether any lasting damage has been done to his liver.

Note to José Manuel Hidalgo, why do you think it’s called the Death Cap?
