La Gota Fria - The Cold Drop,

Reports have been emerging of the tragic news of a British mother (47) and daughter (14) being swept to their death by floodwater in the L’Olleria area, whilst taking a shortcut through a flooded river. Two other women with the deceased managed to scramble out of the river about 25m downstream. The events followed a cloudburst in which in a very short time over 110 litres per square meter of rain was registered.

This severe weather condition is known as La Gota Fria - The Cold Drop, and occurs every year, the cooler air coming from Northern Europe meets the warm sea of the Mediterranean, the sea warms the air which rises higher and higher to form cumulus clouds, warm updrafts carry the water droplets even higher forming thunder clouds, these clouds can often reach 20000 feet. When the droplets become too heavy they fall as heavy/torrential rain and hailstones, and today, Saturday 11th October, after 36 hours of rain the weather now seems to be clearing.

This is a link to a video I found on YouTube, showing the destructive power and sheer volume of water, it was taken on the coast at Moraira in October 2007.
