Unemployment, Worst for 10 years

Unemployment rose 4.2% last month (+103,085), pushing the total to 2,530,001, or 10.5% of the total working population, the worst result since February 1998.

Over the last twelve months, total unemployment has risen by just over half a million (+24.7%) with male workers affected 2.6:1 compared to their female counterparts.

The Valencian Community was the third highest region, where unemployment rose most sharply last month.

The construction industry has been hit the hardest, unemployment has risen 71% over the last twelve months.

President Zapatero is set to announce a packet of proposals to deal with this situation next Wednesday, it is thought to include job creation schemes designed to use the skills of unemployed construction workers. This may include projects such as renovating and conserving public buildings, parks and forestland.
