Spanish Elections on Sunday

The elections will be held in Spain tomorrow, to decide who shall govern this wonderful country for the next 4 years, will it be José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero the present Spanish Socialist Worker's party (PSOE) incumbent, who has a striking resemblance to Mr Bean, or will it be the rightwing People's Party (PP) challenger, Mariano Rajoy.

Zapatero came to power four years ago, at that time the Spanish Socialist Worker's party (PSOE), was closing in on the PP in the run-up to the election, but they looked unlikely to close the gap. The Madrid train bombings on March 11 2004, just three days before the vote, changed all that.

A belief that the government of José María Aznar had lied in its response to the attacks - blaming them on the Basque separatist group Eta and not al-Qaida - led to a high turnout that swung the vote to the Socialists at the last minute.

Had these elections been held in June last year, many people believe it would have been an easy victory for zapatero, however the recent downturn in the economy means that many of the middle-class Spaniards who voted for Zapatero last time are now more concerned about paying their mortgages than supporting social reform.

Zapatero is ahead in the polls, but if the the 2004 result is anything to go by, they can’t be trusted.
