7 Cows take a hike.

A tractor overturned yesterday at 1.40pm on the N-501 near Santa Marta de Tormes (Salamanca), 7 cows being transported made a bit for freedom.

Two of the cows entered Santa Marta, and walked along the Avenida de la Constitución towards the Miguel Hernández Junior School, alarming locals.

The five others carried on walking down the N-501 in the direction of the E.Leclerc shopping centre, holding up traffic for several minutes.

In the end, it was decided to shoot the animals because of the potential risk to the public.

According to a report in today's La Tribuna de Salamanca. "This was the only viable option open to the officers given that the quantity of tranquiliser required to immobilise animals of their size, usually proves fatal anyway."

I find it strange that a country that openly shows it courage by running with the bulls in many Spanish towns, could not find a more suitable outcome to this walking with cows episode.
