licence-plate recognition scheme

Today a new licence-plate recognition scheme will be unveiled by General Traffic Department director, Pere Navarro, and the director of the Insurance Compensation Consortium, Ignacio Macheti, at a press conference in Madrid.

Guardia Civil traffic patrol cars are being fitted with new licence-plate recognition technology that will enable officers to identify car insurance evaders instantly.

The kit scans a suspects licence plate and sends the information directly to a national database (developed by the Insurance Compensation Consortium) to ascertain whether the vehicle is insured and whether payments are up to date.

Twelve cars have already been fitted with the system and will go into service tomorrow.

My question is this, If your insurance is found to be up to date, will you still be issued with a fine if you are not carrying your documentation?

In Spain You must carry all documents pertaining to your vehicle, ITV(MOT in Britain), insurance and bank statement as proof of payment, your driving licence, proof of ownership, and if you wear glasses you should carry a spare pair.

Happy motoring, and watch out for Spanish drivers on those roundabouts, if you've driven in Spain for any length of time you will know what I mean.
