ETA bomb found after seventeen years

In 1991 ETA warned police they had planted a bomb at the Cano Hotel in Torrevieja city centre, as part of a wave of attacks on hotels and restaurants in Málaga and Alicante to coincide with the 1991 general election campaign. The police were unable to find it.

Yesterday a building contractor found a package hidden above a false ceiling in one of the hotel bathrooms. Believing that the clearly deteriorated package was safe, the builder picked up the bomb and moved it to the hotel's underground garage before calling the Guardia Civil.

TEDAX bomb squad experts have since confirmed that the device consists of a 300g explosive charge primed with a homemade timer. Oops
